Concept introduction: Myocardial infarction, generally known as heart attack, occurs when the flow of blood to any part of the heart is reduced or stops. This will result in damage to the heart muscle. The common cause of myocardial infarction is the rupturing of atherosclerotic plaque. Plaques can rupture and will promote the blood clot formation, which blocks the artery.
