The strongest indicator against the notion that testosterone tends to make men more aggressive comes from research that demonstrates how cultural norms and expectations can quite literally burrow their way into a person’s head, which in turn can cause them to behave differently under similar provocation. The prominence of aggression and vigilance nurtures a culture of honor, in which even small disputes prompt men to defend their toughness by responding aggressively to help restore their status.
