Introduction

Older Americans often face poverty, social isolation, prejudice and health problems. Poverty afflicts at least 9% overall, and a higher rate in minority groups. Social isolation happens as friends and confidants pass away. Ageism is prejudice against the old, making it harder for them to find work if they need it. Health problems are a primary concern as people age and face becoming dependent on others.
