Chapter 12, Problem 1NS.1QC
Summary Introduction

To discuss:

That how researchers might use a GFP-labeled protein to study cancer.

Introduction:

Any mutation or alteration in the DNA sequence causes mutations. Cancer is a disease that is caused due to mutation in a cell that results in the abnormal or uncontrolled cell division. GFP or green fluorescent protein is a protein which is bioluminescent and is found in jellyfish. The fluorescent proteins are used as molecular tags.

Explanation of Solution

When the uncontrolled growth of cell or tumor spreads to other sites inside the body by metastasis, it is called as malignant tumor. When a malignant tumor spreads to other parts it starts forming new secondary tumor at new site which contains similar cells like that of original tumors.

The fluorescent proteins of GFP are used as a tag to label the cancerous cells. By this, when tagged cancerous cells will spread to other places in the body, its path could be tracked.

Thus by tagging cancer cells with GFP, their location and distribution can be determined.

Conclusion

Proteins which are GFP labeled are very useful in studying cancer.
