East Coast Trucking provides service from Boston to Miami using regional offices located in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Raleigh, Florence, Savannah, Jacksonville, and Tampa. The number of miles between the regional offices is provided in the following table:
The company’s expansion plans involve constructing service facilities in some of the cities where regional offices are located. Each regional office must be within 400 miles of a service facility. For instance, if a service facility is constructed in Richmond, it can provide service to regional offices located in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Raleigh, and Florence. Management would like to determine the minimum number of service facilities needed and where they should be located.
- a. Formulate an integer linear program that can be used to determine the minimum number of service facilities needed and their locations.
- b. Solve the integer linear program formulated in part (a). How many service facilities are required, and where should they be located?
- c. Suppose that each service facility can provide service only to regional offices within 300 miles. Re-solve the integer linear program with the 300-mile requirement. How many service facilities are required and where should they be located?

- Cholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forwardA southeast regional salesman has eight destinations that he must travel to this month: Atlanta, Raleigh, Charleston, Nashville, Jacksonville, Richmond, Mobile, and Jackson. The number of photos of each type in each package and how many of each type is available is summarized in the following table. Wallet Size 5 x 7 8 x 10 Standard Package 11 1 Plus Package 14 7 Total Available 1694 1470 678 The corporate office requires the lab sell at least 26 standard packages and 8 plus packages a week. If the cost of producing one standard package is $14 and one plus package is $19, how many of each type of package must the photo lab sell each week in order to minimize their costs, but still meet corporate requirements? What is the minimum cost? The minimum cost is $ when standard packages and plus packages are sold.arrow_forward
