Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit signals across a chemical synapse. Small molecules such as biogenic amines, certain amino acids, carbon monoxide (CO), and nitric oxide (NO) act as neurotransmitters. Certain small peptides known as neuropeptides are potent neurotransmitters.
