The first digit of the hand is the thumb. The skeleton of the thumb consists of the first metacarpal bone that articulates proximally with the wrist at the carpometacarpal joint and distally with the proximal phalanx at the metacarpo-phalangeal joint. This latter bone articulates with the distal phalanx at the hinge joint. Additionally, at the metacarpophalangeal joint, there are two sesamoid bones.
