Concept introduction:

A neurotransmitter called acetylcholine releases from the end of nerve cell when the electrical impulses proceed down a motor nerve.Acetylcholine, a biologically active substance, utilizes its action on the cell by binding and activating receptors present on the surface of cells. A type of acetylcholine receptor namely nicotinic acetylcholine receptors are the ligand-gated ion channels that are permeable to potassium, sodium, and calcium ions. These ion channels that are embedded within the cell membrane convert from closed state to the open state when acetylcholine binds to them; in an open state, they permit ions to pass through them.
