EBK GET READY FOR ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Chapter 12, Problem 12.7YT

Concept introduction:

Water can undergo an acid-catalyzed addition to an alkene or alkyne, producing an alcohol or ketone respectively. In these reactions, the electrophilic addition of H+ produces the more stable carbocation intermediate; then H2O attacks the carbocation in a coordination step. Thus, we observe Markovnikov addition of water. Equation 12-21 produces an alcohol.
