Chapter 11.12, Problem 6CC
Summary Introduction
Phototrophy can be defined as the ability of a microorganism to capture light and use the captured light to synthesize ATP and make reducing power. Phototrophy can be classified into three types, oxygenic, anoxygenic, and rhodopsin-based phototrophy. The reducing power and the ATP work together to reduce and fix carbon dioxide by a process called photosynthesis.

The only group of bacteria that are photosynthetic is
The endosymbiotic hypothesis for the origin of chloroplasts from gram-negative prokaryotes is supported by all of the following lines of evidence except:
the presence of enzymes for the light-dependent and the dark reactions of photosynthesis
the presence of circular DNA resembling that of photosynthetic eubacteria
the presence of mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA similar to that of the cyanobacteria
their use of mitosis rather than binary fission during cell division
the presence of 70s ribosomes, consisting of 30s and 50s ribosomal subunits
A researcher illuminated a filament of cyanobacteria with light that passed through a prism, thus exposing different segments of cyanobacteria to different wavelengths of light. He found that all the bacteria in his
sample could grow and reproduce in any of the wavelengths of light, but their colors changed throughout the experiment. What can you conclude about this cyanobacteria sample?
O More chlorophyll a was produced in response to the light exposure.
O The cyanobacteria were dying and were changing color in response.
O The cyanobacteria have various photosynthetic pigments to absorb light.
O More green photosynthetic pigment was produced to absorb light.
