Summary Introduction

General anesthesia is a condition of complete loss of consciousness, including the respiratory function. It requires the mechanical ventilation to support the brain function. The general anesthetics are classified into inhalational anesthetics and injectable anesthetics. The common inhalation anesthetics are isoflurane, desflurane, and sevoflurane. The common injectable anesthetics are etomidate, propofol, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines. The risks associated with the use of general anesthesia are hypotension, nausea, vomiting, and malignant hyperthermia.
