The idea that matter is composed of atoms was proposed by Democritus, pre-Socratic Greek philosopher,and mathematician, who lived between the V-IV centuries BC.This idea was later discarded, until at the beginning of the 19thcentury John Dalton revived the idea to explain chemical reactions postulating that matter was composed of atoms.

In the early 1800’s the idea of atoms was advanced by John Dalton.
