Chapter 11, Problem 13Q
Program Plan Intro

Denial of service (DoS) attack:

Denial of service (DoS) attack is a cyber-attack in which the criminal pursues to make a machine or network resource inaccessible to its future users by temporarily or indefinitely by allocating services of a host connected to the Internet.

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack:

  • Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is developed to generate the attacks on multiple systems after identifying the limitations of flooding attacks with single systems.
  • DDoS attacks mostly the user workstations or Personal computers (PCs).
  • The attacker uses some defect in the operating system or the attacker may gain the access through some common applications and installs their own programs in the system.
  • The collection of large volume of systems under the control of one attacker creates the “botnet”.
    • Botnet is a collection of programs related with the internet and it is communicated with the similar programs to perform the tasks.
  • Using multiple systems, the attacker significantly creates the volume of traffic.
  • Even though it is possible to identify the attack through intermediaries, the attacker is far apart from the target. So, it is harder to identify the attacker.
