Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation: Out of heavy alpha particles and massless gamma rays, which radiation can be handled with shielding the hands only with gloves.
Concept Introduction: A radioactive substance is a substance with unstable nuclei. Due to this unstable nucleus, it undergoes radioactive decay, which is also known as nuclear decay. In this decay, loss of energy takes place by unstable nucleus in the form of radiation. These radiations can may be alpha particle, beta particle, gamma rays, electron. The penetrating power of the different particles coming from radiation varies greatly.
(b)
Interpretation: Out of alpha, beta and gamma rays, which radiation have required heavy lead shielding to protect a worker.
