Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for the limp lettuce becomes crisp when soaked in water in terms of colligative properties is to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Property of a solution that doesn’t depend on the identity of the solute but on the number of solute particles present is known as colligative property.
Osmosis is one of the important colligative properties of solution. Osmosis is the process where solvent particles diffuse through a membrane that does not allow for the passage of solute particles.
The molecules of solvent particles move through the semi permeable membrane from lower solute concentration to the higher solute concentration. The passage of solvent molecules continues until both the solutions become equally concentrated and both the solutions have same osmotic pressure.
The osmotic pressure is the minimum pressure required for a solution to prevent the passage of solvent particles through a semi permeable membrane.
