Concept introduction: Neurotransmitter is a chemical messenger that binds to the receptors present on the postsynaptic neuron. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that utilizes its action on the cell by binding and activating receptors present on the surface of cells. It works through acetylcholine-gated cation channels at the neuromuscular junction. These channels open in response to acetylcholine secreted by the nerve terminal and Na+ ions enter the muscle cell causing membrane depolarization. This results in contraction of muscles.
