Interpretation:

The symmetry species of the normal modes of vibration of the molecule, ${\text{CH}}_{\text{2}}{\text{Cl}}_{\text{2}}$ have to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Spectroscopy method is used to identify the structure of the substance.  It is based on the interactions between matter and electromagnetic radiations.  The complex vibrations exhibited by the polyatomic molecule are known as normal modes of vibrations.  The vibrational modes of a molecule are IR or Raman active.  The total number of vibrational degrees of freedom for the nonlinear molecule is represented by $3N-6$.
