Concept explainers
The cost which is expected by a company to be incurred in the production is called a standard cost. It is used for comparison with the actual cost to determine the variances in cost.
Cost Variance:
Cost Variance is basically the difference between the actual costs and the expected costs. When the actual costs are less than the expected cost, it considered as a favorable variance and when the actual costs are more than the expected costs, it is considered as an unfavorable variance.
1. Prepare a standard cost which separates the variable manufacturing
2. Computation of variable overhead rate and efficiency variances and the labor rate and efficiency variances.
3. Computation of variable overhead rate and efficiency variances. Also compute the fixed overhead and volume variances.
4. What effect, if any, does the choice of a denominator activity level have on unit standard costs? Is the volume variance a controllable variance from a spending point of view? Explain.
