The term chromosome has been derived from two Greek words, namely chroma (meaning color) and soma (meaning body). The term is used because the chromosomes appear colored when the dyes are used. The chromosomes are the tightly coiled DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecules around the protein molecules.
