To discuss:
The role played by meiosis in sexual reproduction.
Introduction:
The shuffling of chromosomes and maintaining the constant chromosome number similar to the parent genome is the roles played by the meiosis in sexual reproduction.
Explanation of Solution
The sexual reproduction includes the process of gametogenesis in which two sexually different gametes are produced. In such a process, the resultant gametes only have half the number chromosomes of the parent genome. At the time of fertilization, the fusion of gametes produces the zygote which contains the diploid number of chromosomes. Apart from the maintenance of chromosome, meiosis brings about the recombination of genetic particles as it shuffles the genes across chromosomes.
The mitosis division occurs in the somatic cells for growth and meiosis occurs in the gametocytes to produce haploid gametes.
