Summary Introduction
To review:
The contribution of calcium ions and ATP to muscle contraction and relaxation.
Introduction:
A muscle is a form of tissue that provides movement and support to body of living organisms. It consists of myosin and actin proteins that help in contraction and relaxation of muscles. According to the sliding filament theory, contraction and relaxation of muscles require energy for movement. Calcium ions perform the binding of actin and myosin. Once calcium ions are diffused in the sarcoplasm, they expose the myosin binding site, hence allowing binding of actin to myosin. It causes splitting of ATP to ADP and inorganic phosphate.
