Chapter 10, Problem 4E
Recording Payroll Costs with and without Withholdings
Assume an employee of Rocco Rock Company earns $1, 000 of gross wages during the current pay period and is required to remit to the government $100 for income tax and $50 for FICA. Consider the following two procedures for paying the employee:
Procedure 1 (Withholdings) | Procedure 2 (No Withholdings) |
Rocco Rock Company pays the employee net wages of $850 and will remit income taxes and FICA on behalf of the employee. | Rocco Rock Company pays the employee gross wages of $1,000 and the employee is responsible for remitting income taxes and FICA himself. |
Required:
- 1. Ignoring employer payroll taxes, under each procedure calculate (a) the total labor cost for the company and (b) the amount of cash the employee will have after satisfying all responsibilities to the government. Do your answers for procedures 1 and 2 differ for (a)? For (b)?
- 2. Explain why procedure 1 (withholdings) is the approach required by the government.
- 3. Considering that employers are responsible for matching employees’ FICA contributions, explain why employers might also prefer procedure 1 over procedure 2.
- 4. Prepare the
journal entries required by the employer under procedure 1, assuming that the employee is paid in cash, but the withholdings and matching employer FICA contribution have not yet been paid. (Assume nounemployment taxes.)

Federal unemployment taxes of 0.70% and state unemployment taxes of 0.90% are payable on $405,700 of the wages earned. Required: 1. Compute the amounts of taxes payable and the amount of wages that will be paid to employees. Then prepare the journal entries to record the wages earned and the payroll taxes. Assume that none of the employees has achieved the maximums for FICA and unemployment taxes. 2. Add the new employee to the PR5 worksheet and include all standard withholding rates in computing net pay. Federal income tax withheld is 101. He is a union member. Preview the printout to make sure that the worksheet will print neatly on one page, and then print the worksheet. Save the completed file as PRT. Chart. Using the PR4 file, prepare a 3-D pie chart to show the percentage of an employees gross pay that is withheld for taxes, Social Security, and so on, and how much is left over as net pay. Use Smith as your example. Complete the Chart Tickler Data Table and use it as a basis for preparing the chart. Enter your name somewhere on the chart. Save the file again as PR4.
