Chapter 10, Problem 24P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason for the fact that peroxides are especially effective as radical initiators is to be explained. Also, the mechanism for the reaction representing how it could be initiated by di-tert-butyl peroxide is to be written.

Concept Introduction:

Peroxides are the class of compounds in which two oxygen atoms are joined together by a single covalent bond.

In the free radical mechanism of the peroxide, the free radicals produced by an oxygen-oxygen bond initiate the chain.

Then, a hydrogen atom is extracted by these free radicals to produce an alkyl radical which attacks bromine molecule.

In the following nucleophilic substitution reaction, does the top or bottom have the higher reaction rate. Why?
b) Explain in detail what characteristics of the alkyl halide influence whether a mechanism will be SN1 or SN2. c) Explain in detail what characteristics of a nucleophile influence whether a reaction will be SN1 or SN2.
Please provide a complete, detailed curved-arrow mechanism for the following reaction.Include ALL lone pairs and formal charges. Using the mechanism and a few words, explain the why the NaH deprotonates at the selected a-position and not the other a-position. Also explain why the indicated alkene is formed in the 3rd step rather than the other possible alkene product.
