Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The structure of three different dichloroethylenes X, Y, and Z are to be determined and also whether the compound Y is polar or non polar is to be identified.
Concept introduction:
To draw the Lewis structure of the molecule following steps are used.
Step 1: Find the central atom and place the other atoms around it. The atom in a compound which has the lowest group number or lowest electronegativity considered as the central atom.
Step 2: Calculate the total number of valence electrons.
Step 3: Connect the other atoms around the central atoms to the central atom with a single bond and lower the value of valence electrons by 2 of every single bond.
Step 4: Allocate the remaining electrons in pairs so that each atom can get 8 electrons.
The dipole moment arises when there is a separation of charges between two ions or atoms involved in the bond. The dipole moment is a vector quantity and its direction towards the most electronegative atom.
The direction of the dipole moment is represented as follows:
The polar and non-polar molecule can be identified on the basis of the net dipole moment. Polar molecules have non zero value of net dipole moment and the nonpolar molecules have zero net dipole moment.
