Chapter 1, Problem 1.76P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The electrostatic potential map that best describes the nitromethane molecule is to be identified and the reason for the choice is to be explained.

Concept introduction:

An electrostatic potential map represents electron clouds in a molecule in various colors that indicate its relative charge. Red color indicates the buildup of a negative charge whereas the blue color indicates a buildup of a positive charge. Colors in between red and blue, in the spectrum, indicate a more neutral charge. Electronegative elements attract electron density through a bond to build up a negative charge than the less electronegative elements. Two equal resonance contributors for a molecule suggests equal distribution of electron density.

What is the reaction mechanism for this?
Predict the major products of both organic reactions. Be sure to use wedge and dash bonds to show the stereochemistry of the products when it's important, for example to distinguish between two different major products. esc esc Explanation Check 2 : + + X H₁₂O + Х ง WW E R Y qab Ccaps lock shift $ P X Click and drag to start drawing a structure. © 2025 McGraw Hill LLC.
