Question

Write the reaction of PCl5 with heavy water.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Phosphorous pentachloride has chemical formula PCl5 and it is a pale greenish-yellow solid color compound.

Chemical formula for heavy water is D2O.

Step 2

When PCl5 is treated with heavy water then it leads to the formation of Deuterium Phosphate (D3PO4) and deuterium chloride.

The reaction equation is as follows.

PCl5 +D2O POCl3 +2DClPOCl3 + 3D2O D3PO4 + 3DCl

Therefore, overall reaction will be written as follows.

PCl5 + 4D2O D3PO4 + 5DCl

As here, the number of atoms present on reactant side is equal to the number of atoms present on product side. Therefore, this is a balanced chemical equation.
