The Indian movement for independence from the British empire was one that lasted for almost a hundred years. It was marked with several important events that contributed significantly to the struggle. One such event was the Revolt of 1857 also known as a sepoy mutiny.The revolt broke out among sepoys of Meerut who were a part of the British-Indian army. One of the immediate causes of the revolt was greased cartridges (Gardiner, 1881). Since many of the sepoys were staunch Brahmin Hindus, according to their religious ideology they were prohibited from consuming cow meat. However, rumors spread among the sepoys that the new rifles made were coated with cow fat. This led to anger and resentment among the soldiers as it was seen as a deliberate attempt to defile their holy status. Campbell (1858) states that the rumor was further exacerbated by perceived attempts at proselytization by the British. The sepoys believed that the British planned on converting them to Christianity and greasing the rifles with cow fat was just the beginning. Additionally, the annexation of Oudh district was a blow to the nationalistic pride as many of the sepoys belonged to the region, and believed that it had been unfairly annexed by the Empire. Although Campbell says this came as a blessing in disguise for the people of Oudh, he blames the prejudiced attitude of the sepoys rising from their barbarism which made them blind to the benefits of this takeover. Thus, these are some of the reasons for the revolt- the alleged greasing of the rifle with cow fat, the fears of conversion by indirect methods, and the wrongful annexation of Oudh.
