Question

Write an equation for the reaction between each Lewis acid-base pair, showing electron flow by means of curved arrows.

Q.) (CH3)2CH+ + Cl- ---------->

Expert Solution
Step 1

An acid is a substance that gives H+ ions in its solution whereas a basic substance gives OH- ions in its solution. The reaction of an acid HA with a base BOH can be written as:

HA + BOHBA + H2O

Here BA stands for salt and the reaction named as neutralization reaction. Thus the reaction of an acid with a base results in the formation of salt and water. The salt is an ionic compound that is formed by the combination of the cation (B+) from base and anion (A-) from acid and forms salt BA.

Step 2

Another theory of acid and base is called as Lewis acid-base theory. It stands that the molecule which can give its extra pair of electrons ( negative charge or lone pair), is called as Lewis base.

Whereas the molecule which has tendency to accept the electrons is called as Lewis acid.

Step 3

In the given reaction, Cl- must be Lewis base as it has negative charge and  (CH3)2CHmust be Lewis acid as it has positive charge.
