Introduction

Blood to the brain, face, and neck is supplied by a major blood vessel found in the neck called the carotid artery. There are 2 carotid arteries with one on the left side of the neck and the other on the right side. Each of these carotid arteries in turn branch in the internal carotid (supplies blood to the brain) and the external carotid (supplies blood to the face and neck).

Similar to other arteries carotid arteries are also made of three tissue layers. The outermost layer is called the adventitia, the middle layer is called the media and the innermost layer is called the intima.
