Hearing is of the special senses present in the human body, and ears are the organs concerned with this special sense. Infections or structural damage can alter the detection and perception of this sense. Otitis media, which is a very common ear infection among children, is characterized by the accumulation of infected fluid (pus) in the ear's middle region. This accumulated fluid pushes on the eardrum and causes pain; another effect of this infection the loss of hearing as the presence of pus leads to the inefficient transmission of sound vibrations from the eardrum to the structures of the inner ear.
