Expert Solution
Step 1: Introduction

The superior mediastinum and the inferior mediastinum of the mediastinum are separated by an artificial horizontal plane called the thoracic plane, often referred to as the trans thoracic plane or the plane of Ludwig.

It extends from the manubriosternal joint (sternal angle or angle of Louis) to the inferior end plate of T4. It consists of the following structures-

  • Tracheal bifurcation, or the carina
  • The interior concavity of the aortic arch
  • bifurcation of the pulmonary trunk
  • The right major bronchus is crossed by the azygos vein, which empties into the SVC.
  • The aortic arch is encircled by the left recurrent laryngeal nerve.
  • The thoracic duct travels posterior to the ligamentum arteriosum of the esophagus from side to side.
