A buffer solution resists the abrupt change in the pH of the solution that results in the addition of acid or base. The buffer solution is the combination of the weak acid and its salt or a weak base and its salt. The former is an acidic buffer and the latter is a basic buffer. The pH of the buffer solution is obtained by employing the concentration of the weak acid and its salt as follows:

pH=pKa+log [salt][acid]   

The equation is termed the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation.
