Which is the more reliable technique for identifying an unknown compound and why?
- IR spectrum
- Melting point
- Thin-layer chromostography (TLC)
Every technique is important to identify a new compound.
But the answer of the question is IR spectrum.
Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) is responsible for IR spectrum. Using this spectroscopy, we can identify the vibrational frequencies of a particular compound. In IR spectrum, there are two regions where we can study about the compound. One is fingerprint zone (600 to 1400 cm^-1) and functional group zone (1400-3400 cm^-1). The functional group zone gives us ideas about the functional group vibrational frequencies. Each functional group gives unique frequencies, with which we can identify the unknown compound or we can say most probable guess.
