Which form of conditioning is used most for behavior modification? Why does this form work better?
Behavior Modification can be defined as process in which the the undesirable behavior of an individual changes or modify and give rise to desirable behavior. In other words, the core principle of behavior modification is to change the unpleasant behavior or awful behavior into pleasant one.
Generally, two types of methods or principles are used to change or modify the behavior. which are as follows:
- Reinforcement
- Punishment
Reinforcement can be defined as strengthening or energizing or fortify the particular behavior, can either be done by giving positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement.
- Positive: strengthening or fortify the particular behavior by giving rewards or something that is pleasant or pleasurable. This kind of reinforcement is generally given in an organisations like giving trophies to the employees, that motivates them to work harder in the future.
- Negative: strengthening or fortify the particular behavior to avoid getting the unpleasant or undesirable consequences/outcomes
Punishment can be given in either of the two ways:
- Removal or with drawl of something that is quite favorable or pleasing to the individual, for example: when the adolescent misbehaves with the elder people in the household, then punishment can be given by taking away his mobile phone and stop all his communications with his friends.
- Addition of something that is unfavorable or troublesome for an individual, for example: when the child misbehaves, then he or she might get a slap from his/her mother.
