Glia, also known as neuroglia, are non-neuronal cells in the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system that do not produce electrical impulses. They maintain body equilibrium, produce myelin in the nervous system, and nourish and protect neurons. Glial cells in the central nervous system include oligodendrocytes, astrocytes, ependymal cells, and microglia, whereas Schwann cells and satellite cells constitute glial cells in the peripheral nervous system. They have four main functions: they surround and hold neurons in place, they provide nutrients and oxygen to neurons, they insulate one neuron from another, and they remove infections and dead neurons.

Microglia are a type of neuroglia present throughout the brain and spinal cord. Microglia account for 10% to 15% of all brain cells. Because they are resident macrophage cells, they are the first and most significant type of active immune defense in the central nervous system (CNS). Microglia are located in large, non-overlapping zones across the CNS. Microglia are critical brain cells because they continually scan the CNS for plaques, damaged or unnecessary neurons and synapses, and infectious pathogens.

Microglia cells are immune cells in the central nervous system that play a critical role in brain infections and inflammation. According to recent in vivo imaging studies, microglia in the resting healthy brain move constantly to actively explore the brain parenchyma.
