Floating foundation is a foundation which is constructed by excavation of the soil in such a manner that the structure's weight built on the soil is almost equal to the total soil weight excavated from the ground, including the soil weight before the structure was constructed.
The Floating Foundations are installed where
-
Soils having strong shear strength but have a problem under heavy loads of differential settlement and large settlements. In this case, the floating foundations will lower the values of settlement to a larger extent.

Soils which have low shear strength and at appropriate depth where there is no hard soil layer. In this case, floating foundations help to lower shear stress to a sufficient level and thus avoid settlement.
