Dealing with Food Allergies in School Settings
Judy is to start regular kindergarten. When she was two years old, she was diagnosed with a peanut allergy. Her health has improved with avoidance of peanuts. At age 4, however, she had an episode of breathing difficulty that required an ER visit. This incident makes the family quite concerned about sending Judy to school.
A meeting was held at the school to discuss plans for Judy to avoid peanut exposure at school. Her mom proposed to pack her lunch at home instead of get school foods. A plan was put in place for teachers to check the snack foods and offer a replacement snack for Judy if she was unsure if there were peanuts present. Judy was also assigned a specific table in the cafeteria to avoid being close to peanuts in other lunches.
After 1 month, Judy had 2 episodes resulting in hives.
