What would happen if tattoo ink was injected into the epidermis?
The skin has three layers: the outer epidermis layer, below it is the dermis layer, and the innermost hypodermis (subcutaneous) layer. The epidermis acts as a barrier and is waterproof. The skin tone is determined by this layer. The dermis is located below the epidermis and has sweat glands, hair follicles, and hard connective tissue. The layer below the dermis is called the hypodermis and is made of connective tissue and fat.
While drawing a tattoo, the needle pierces the skin to a depth of 1.5 to 2.0 mm to deposit the ink. This is done to penetrate the area below the epidermis because the epidermis is renewed continuously. Dead cells are shed and are replaced by new skin cells. If the ink is deposited into the epidermis, then within three weeks the tattoo will come off. To make the tattoo permanent, the ink should be deposited either in the dermis layer or in the hypodermis. However, these layers have connective tissue and nerve endings, and hence hurts while getting a tattoo.
