What stimuli activate the thirst center?
What stimuli activate the thirst center?
the brain is one of the key players in maintaining the activities of our body. it contains various structures which show clear-cut division of labor and maintain various functions of the body.
the hypothalamus is a structure located in the brain which is responsible for controlling various activities. This structure also has the thirst center in it. A receptor that changes in the osmotic pressure and is located in the hypothalamus is the osmoreceptor.
When the intake of fluid is lower than the output, the volume of the blood decreases. Low blood volume can lead to an increase in the osmolarity of the plasma. This increase is detected by the osmoreceptors. A biological sensation of thirst is created when these osmoreceptors send a signal to the thirst center in the hypothalamus. ADH [antidiuretic hormone] secretion is also stimulated by these osmoreceptors which will start the events to maintain the osmolarity. Low blood pressure is also indicative of low blood volume, this can also activate the thirst centers.
