Question

What situation comes when a carbon carbon triple bond(alkynes) is treated with 1).O3 the 2). H2O

Expert Solution
Step 1

Hydrocarbons are organic molecules that are made up of carbons and hydrogens. The three major hydrocarbons are alkane, alkenes, and alkynes. The hydrocarbons that have single bonds between the carbon atoms are called alkanes. Those having double bonds are called alkenes and the ones having triple bonds are called alkynes. Their general formulae are represented below-

Alkane: CnH2n+2Alkene: CnH2nAlkyne: CnH2n-2

Step 2

Alkynes react with ozone (O3 ) and then water (H2O) to form carbonyl compounds and the carbon-carbon bond of the alkyne is completely broken and this reaction is called Ozonolysis.

The general reaction scheme is-
