The Wangxia Treaty was the first formal agreement signed between the United States and China in 1844. It served as America's replica of Nanjing's Anglo-Chinese Accord, the first. War in 1842.
Wars and these agreements symbolize the era in which Western powers fought between Europe and the US, trying to gain unhindered markets for Chinese products and trade.
In the 1850s, the United States and European powers became dissatisfied with the terms of their treaties with China and the Qing government failed to comply with them. The British forced the issue during the Second War (1857–1858) by attacking the Chinese port cities of Guangzhou and Tianjin. According to the Most Favored Nation Clause, all foreign powers operating in China were allowed to take into China the same concessions that Great Britain forcibly obtained. As a result, France, Russia, and the United States quickly signed treaties with China in 1858 at Tianjin.
