What points, concerning myxedema coma are correct ?
A. Hypothermia is common
B. Feeling warm may provoke myxedema coma
C. Cause is – increase sensitivity to T3 and T4 receptors.
D. Hyperfunction of adrenal glands is present
E. Thyroid cancer

Expert Solution
Step 1

Hypothyroidism is characterized by the hyposecretion of the thyroid hormone from the thyroid gland present in the throat/neck. Thyroxine hormone (tetraiodothyronine or T4) and tri-iodothyronine or T3 is responsible for the regulation of the metabolic rate of the body and thus maintain the BMR. In hypothyroidism, the low levels of thyroid hormone results in elevated blood cholesterol level. Irregular or heavier than normal menstrual cycle, slowed heart rate, etc. irregular menstrual cycle leading to hormonal imbalance.

Step 2

Myxedema coma is a rare condition where the brain functioning is impaired due to prolonged low levels of thyroxine hormone.

Hypothermia is one of the common clinical features of myxedema coma. Continuous low levels of thyroxine hormone leads to hypoglycemia which exacerbate the hypothermia.

Body temperature usually remain less than 35.5 °C and cold exposure worsen the condition.

The main cause of myxedema coma is decreased sensitivity to T3 and T4 receptors.

One of the causes of hypothyroidism is impairment of pituitary-adrenal function. In some cases, administration of exogenous thyroid hormone to restore mornal metabolic rates may result in adrenal insufficiency.

Thyroid cancer is caused due to uncontrolled proliferation of the thyroid cells. people may observe liump in the neck and thyroid hormone imbalance in some cases. It is not necessarily related with myxedema coma.
