What makes up the central nervous system? Give real life examples.
The “central” part of the name is given because it combines information from the entire body and coordinates activity across the whole body by enabling it to function accordingly. The brain is the most complex organ in the body and it consists of about 100 billion neurons with each connected to thousands and more. The brain is protected by the skull inside the cranial cavity and the spinal cord connects the back of the brain down the centre of the spine, stopping in the lumbar region of the lower back.
The brain and spinal cord are housed protectively within a triple-layered membrane called the meninges.
It controls our thoughts, emotions, movements and desires. It also controls breathing, heart rate, release of hormones during necessary times, body temperature and so much more.
