Iron infiltration occurs through isolated epithelial cells (enterocytes) of the middle and upper villus, and especially in the adjacent part of the small intestine. Immature enterocytes are intestinal crypts that carry iron in stark contrast to their mature counterparts. They are not organic in nature and absorb large amounts of iron bound by TF in the blood, unlike mature enterocytes. As cells grow and divide, they acquire their absorption properties but lose the ability to pick up iron in circulation.
