In presence of an external magnetic field, the spin aligns in the direction of magnetic field or opposite to the magnetic field by absorbing energy from radio frequency region.

The area under the nmr signal represents the number of absorbing protons.

These are the protons with that resonance represents.

By integrating the peak, the number of chemically equivalent protons can be found.

Integrals appear as a line over the peak.

Integration only gives the relative number of protons, not an absolute number.
