Segregation, which is the division of groups of persons with different characteristics, is also considered a discrimination condition. Ethnic segregation is one of the forms of segregation that can range from intentional and systemic persecution to self-imposed separation by more subtle types of discrimination.
But segregation may also be a product of conditions that may not be morally unsettling. In and of itself, segregation is not a normative term, like injustice, but is instead a phenomenon that needs all its dimensions to be examined to ascribe causation. Under the Law of the International Criminal Court, racial discrimination would amount to the international crime of apartheid and a crime against humanity.
Practices of segregation may be witnessed by the division or isolation of a race, class, or ethnic group by an imposed or voluntary residency in a restricted area, by barriers of social interaction, separate educational services, or other forms of discrimination.
