What is correlation in regards to psychology?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Correlation is a technique that shows the strength of the relationship and whether a pair of variables in the relationship are linearly related. Correlation can be measured using the scatter plot and by calculating the correlation coefficient. Correlation does not mean that a change in one variable causes a change in the other because correlation does not mean causation.

Scatter plot: The linear relationship between the two variables can be shown by plotting the scatter plot and taking one variable in the X-axis and the other in the Y-axis. If the points are near the straight line, the correlation is strong. If the points are not close to the straight line, the correlation is weak. Farther away the points are from the straight line, weaker the correlation is.

It also indicates the type of the relationship. The positive slope of the line indicates that the correlation is positive. The negative slope of the line indicates that the correlation is negative.

Step 2

Correlation coefficient: It ranges from -1 to +1. The positive and negative values indicate whether the correlation is positive or negative, respectively. The values nearer +1 and -1 indicate that the correlation is strong and the value near 0 indicates that the correlation is weak or that there is no linear relation.

Positive correlation means that as one variable increases (decreases), the other also increases (decreases).

Negative correlation means that as one variable increases (decreases), the other variable decreases (increases).
