THIS IS NOT AND WILL NOT BE GRADED
Leukocytes are part of the cellular components of the blood apart from the red blood cells and the platelets. These cellular components are suspended in a fluid called the plasma of the blood. The leukocytes are motile, nucleated cells that are involved in the protection of the body from infections by ingestion of the foreign particles through phagocytosis or through the production of antibodies. A normal level of leukocytes in the blood range from 4,500 and 11,000 cells per cubic millimeter of blood. Leukocytosis is a condition of the human body when there is an increase in the number of leukocytes in the body whereas leukopenia is a condition when there is a decrease in the number of leukocytes in the blood. Leukocytosis can occur due to physical exertion, convulsions, pain, pregnancy, labor, and certain infections. Leukopenia is associated with certain medications, anemia, malnutrition, anaphylaxis, etc. When observed under the light microscope, the leukocytes can be classified into lymphocytes, granulocytes, and monocytes based on their appearance. Lymphocytes include the B cells and the T cells which help in the specific response against the antigens. Granulocytes which make up the majority of the leukocytes act against large pathogens like the helminths or protozoans and are involved as mediators of allergies and inflammation. Monocytes differentiate into macrophages and are involved in the phagocytosis of foreign particles.
