Question

What does an anaerobic digester do?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Anaerobic means without oxygen.

Digester is related to a large tank in which  anaerobic digestion takes place with the help of anaerobic bacteria.

Anaerobic digestion is also known as methanization.

Step 2

Anaerobic digestion is  process by which bacteria degrade organic matter like manure in the absence of oxygen. As they grow and digest the organic matter they produce biogas.

This type of fermentation process reduces the amount of oragnic matter and generates  biogas(methane , hydrogen sulphde etc) that is used as an energy source for various activities.
