During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portuguese explorers took the lead in exploring the European seas, leading them to India, establishing numerous trading posts in Asia and Africa, and adjusting what would become Brazil, forming one of the most powerful empires.
Portuguese sailors were on a European naval mission, discovering and mapping the African, Asian, and Brazilian seas. As early as 1317, King Denis made a treaty with Genoese merchant Manuel Pessanha (Pesagno), appointing him as the first Admiral for trade rights with his country, to repatriate twenty ships and crew, with the aim of protecting the country from the Muslim thieves. This created the foundation of the Portuguese Navy and the establishment of a community of Genoese merchants in Portugal.
